If art can be likened to a language, I aspire to be a polyglot; every artistic medium presents a new mode of communication, allowing for further expansion of the conversation between artist, art, and viewer.
I thoroughly enjoy working in any medium that suits the conversation I am initiating. I have worked in any medium that I have been able to try: acrylics, oils, egg tempera, watercolours, gouache, ink, printmaking, felting, weaving, creation of wearables, installation, performance, animation, and more. As an artist, I am always hungry for new ways of making.
Although my work is often confessional, I aspire to engage with the viewer and invite a confession of their own; the themes I explore such as grief/loss, change/growth, text, intimacy, and connection are shared human experiences regardless of individual circumstances. Grief can take many forms: loss of a loved one, possibilities made impossible by chronic illness/pain, exclusion from societal acceptance, mourning a previous self, and infinitely more. In all my work, I strive to convey the experience’s emotion.
Written text can quickly and efficiently deliver a message. Through distorting, mirroring, inverting, and obfuscating the text itself, I am able to change the experience of receiving said message and bring into question the relationship between legibility and comprehension; does reading a piece of text equate to understanding the content? Does the meaning of a sentence change if it’s the size of a billboard versus the size of a business card? If it’s embroidered, printed, painted, or sculpted? Working with text offers me another powerful mode of communication.
When I am not creating, I continue to try and live a life full of variety; I enjoy swimming, sea-kayaking, hiking, cross-country skiing, playing video games with friends, reading, looking after my plants, moving all my furniture around, and playing music.
